Age: 17

Canon Point: Durarara!!x2 Episode 19, immediately after he sees Mikado set a dude on fire
Background: "Your guilt will become your past, and your past will be your god."
Personality:
Masaomi Kida's character is summed up nicely with just his name. It means "righteous vassal."
From a very young age, Masaomi has aspired to be a hero. He was the kind of little kid who went into the woods at 4AM and threw a beehive at junior high bullies so that he could catch a rhinoceros beetle for an even littler kid who had theirs stolen. He caught a hell of a lot more than one beetle while he was in those woods. He could have sold the rest for profit, but he didn't. All of that effort was exerted just so one other kid could be happy. Masaomi hasn't changed as much as he thinks he has since then. Whether he's acting as the playful but harmless flirt or the brutal and brooding gang boss, every silly or vengeful action he takes revolves around his burning desire to save others. He may not always know what's right, but he knows when something is wrong, and he is almost too willing to sacrifice himself in the name of ending those injustices. Examples of his heroic deeds include everything from small, everyday gestures like finding a member of a particular underground group who can reassure his best friend that it isn't as dangerous as the rumors say to life altering vigilantism like threatening a teacher who is sexually harassing a female student. Even his delinquent gang was founded only because he began interrupting unfair fights he saw on the streets. He gets into most of his trouble by taking on the burdens of others, fighting so that they don't have to. He lives to make the people he loves happy because that makes him feel needed. Masaomi Kida needs to feel needed.
Masaomi's other core trait is his servile loyalty, his exaggerated notion that he owes everything to anyone willing to give him the time of day. Masaomi has honestly never been given any indication that he deserves love or attention, so he works damn hard to earn it. He'll start small, jumping through hoops and doing extensive research to make his friends laugh at every opportunity. The closer he becomes to someone, however, the more convinced he is that they will leave him the moment he can't give them what they need. It's no surprise then that he does his absolute best to keep his friends Mikado and Anri safe from anything that could harm them, considers it his mission in life to watch over them as a budding couple free from worry. Unfortunately, this otherwise altruistic attitude can turn dangerous fast. Masaomi's friends are really all he has, both in a physical and emotional sense. When someone gets past him, hurts those people he's clinging to so desperately, he starts a damn gang war to avenge them. Masaomi doesn't just go to bat for his friends; he'd kill for them. Whether they want him to or not. They are good people, much better than him, and if they're too nice to seek revenge, he'll do it in their stead. After all, what good is a vassal if he won't even take the fall for his emperor?
Not unlike one of the most well-known examples of righteous vassals throughout history, Masaomi personifies both the romanticized knight in shining armor here to rescue the damsel in distress and the crusading knight of war ready to destroy anything he can't make his own.
Weaknesses/Temptations:
Masaomi is a coward. This fact was proven to him in the most traumatic way possible, and he has since internalized it as an inescapable aspect of his character rather than as something he can overcome. There are many things he is afraid of: Izaya Orihara's machinations, guns, isolation, failure, betrayal, his own dark side, not being able to protect his friends or his girlfriend. What frightens him most, however, is that people will realize just how cowardly, how flawed he really is. This is why he tries so desperately to put up a smiling front whether he's happy or not, why he lies about his affiliations and omits his concerns and conceals his past failures. Bubbling beneath his unshakable love for his friends is also a fear that those very friends would hate him should they learn what he really is: a fuck up. His self worth is entirely dependent on supporting those he loves. For them to discover the truth, that he's both dangerous and pathetic, not someone to be relied upon, is so much more terrifying than any amount of pain he could be made to endure. He cannot cope with the thought that his friends might leave him because of his failures and often resorts to running away from them first.
He also suffers from deeply ingrained trust issues. Masaomi's parents never cared much about him, letting him roam the wilds on his own even at 4AM. Then his family moved to the city. He was forced to leave behind his only friend and support just in time for scheming informant Izaya Orihara to sink his teeth into him. The man coaxed Masaomi into relying on him, gave him the feeling of belonging he so desperately craved, and then shattered his tiny world with a set-up that left his girlfriend in a coma. Since then, not only can Masaomi not trust adults or authority even in life-threatening situations, he has trouble believing that anyone could honestly love him while knowing his faults. He hates himself so thoroughly that he can't see how anyone else could feel different. For the same reasons, Masaomi doesn't trust himself either. His ability to make good life decisions is nigh nonexistent. He's not stupid necessarily, but he is compromised. When the aforementioned Izaya set Masaomi up, he stamped the official seal on Masaomi's insecurity and self-loathing. Self-esteem was out the window, and the trauma led him to question everything he'd ever felt for anyone in his life. Masaomi no longer trusts his intuition, his conviction, or his influence. He no longer trusts himself, and his resulting indecision always fans the flames of his problems.
There's really only one right answer when it comes to what tempts Masaomi Kida: attention. Masaomi is an attention whore of the highest caliber. Despite that his actual desire is love, he doesn't believe he genuinely deserves it, and so he readily settles for whatever attention he can get instead, convincing himself that it's just as good as the real deal. This is especially apparent in how he treats the opposite sex. He's an unrepentant flirt who will loudly compliment any woman's breasts like that's something she'd ever want to hear. He loves his inappropriate sexual jokes and has endless fun teasing girls he finds attractive. These interactions are shallow and fleeting, but Masaomi clings to them anyway, sometimes outright begging a girl to keep her eyes on him. It doesn't count as cheating if they only chat while eating! Needless to say, he gets turned down 99% of the time, but that's never stopped him from trying. He's just that lonely.
